These cold water spiny rock lobster tails come from Tristan Da Cunha. The island is the most remote inhabited island in the world that is only accessible by sea, departing from Cape Town and then heading south for 6 days. The fishing of these lobsters makes up 75% of the islands revenue.
The Island fishery was awarded MSC sustainable fishery status back in 2011 and they have been going from strength to strength since. These tails are similar in appearance to our more well known 'rock lobster tails' that come from the warm waters of the Caribbean. Coldwater lobsters grow slower and ultimately arent as large as their warm-water counterparts. They are about the same price as the warm water tails so why not buy one of each and see which you prefer? The Tristan rock lobster tails boast a silky smooth texture and sweet flavour. They also promote these tails as 'sashimi grade' which is new for us having never considered raw lobster to be a sashimi line. If you make sushi or sashimi with them, let us know how you get on!
