Primal Cut is a family run business created by husband & wife team, Mike and Kate Oliver. They make real and natural foods – Free From gluten, artificial preservatives, added sulphites, added sugar, dairy, eggs, phosphates, nitrates, fillers, shelf life extenders, artificial colours, bread, rusk, oats, MSG, GM, soya, collagen – suitable for coeliac, diabetes, low carb, paleo, primal, keto diets.
Micheal & Kate Oliver grew their business in response to finding it difficult to source 100% real and natural convenience food for their paleo based, simple, grain free, gluten free diet. They created Primal Cut with the aim of making a grain-free diet easier to switch to and stick to, no matter what your version of grain-free looks like.
Michael hand crafts multi award winning gluten free, preservative free sausages, nitrate free bacon & charcuterie in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. As you’d expect his starting point is pork of the highest quality from Anna’s Happy Trotters, over the way in East Yorkshire. Only 1-2% of UK pigs are kept free range like Anna’s, to the highest welfare standards, roaming freely and happily at her farm. This accords 100% with Michael & Kate’s Slow Food Principles.
Michael loves to talk about bacon too! Did you know that the standard curing of commercial bacon takes just a few days, involving injecting upto 25% water and phosphates, the colour and flavour coming from the addition of sodium nitrites. Though permitted by EU and UK law, there are strict rules on the safe levels of nitrate and nitrite that may be used in food, and there is a threat of increased cancer risk linked to sodium nitrate.
Michael’s bacon can take 5 weeks to cure! His dry cure nitrate-free bacon blends Organic Himalayan salt, Traditional and fresh herbs, Natural and Fresh fruits - without added sulphites, Spices sourced as locally as possible. The result is all-natural nitrite free bacon with a subtle fragrance and intense flavors not found in traditionally cured shop bacon.
These days in UK supermarkets if you want sausages, there is a huge choice, some claiming to be good for you - some not. There is a common denominator in all this choice; preservatives! Each brand of sausages from premium gluten-free sausage brands, to the white economy options all, have artificial preservatives to extend shelf life. But if you are looking for healthy sausages, 100% natural, based on new world principles of clean eating, no sugar, no chemicals, and real food then they are few and far between.
The Primal Cut method of sausage making is nothing new, though it is very different to how most sausages are produced today. They took influence from the all-natural food and produce being made day in day out in Italy, Poland, Australia, and New Zealand as standard, questioning why we the British public settle for second best with our over-processed food.
Following on from their principles of producing real natural foods, in 2018, Kate added the Australian brand “Primal Alternative” to the Primal Cut range. Kate hand-bakes grain-free breads, fruit toasts, no nut hemp wraps, pizza bases, keto cookies, and a range of bake your own mixes from the Tiny 5* Bakery. In 2020, she also added organic microgreens from a local supplier and a great range of unsweetened ketchups and Mayos all from Hunter & Gather.
Michael and Kate produce real food for paleo, primal, keto and low carb-ers & offer nut free, egg free, vegan, low FODMAP and GAPS-friendly options. They believe that what you eat and how you look and feel are intrinsically linked. They wanted to offer people an alternative to what they can find on the supermarket shelves providing real healthy eating choices for a healthier you. Michael and Kate wanted to provide simple nourishing meals for families made from wholesome ingredients so that even those on a special diet, or food intolerance, all can now enjoy the same meal.
