The Wold Top Brewery

Pure, chalk filtered water from the farm’s own borehole travels only a few metres to the brewery, where the Mellor’s use traditional methods and recipes to create a really fantastic range of real ales.

Tom & Gill Mellor along with their daughter Kate and husband Alex, farm 600 acres of rolling countryside, high up on the Yorkshire Wolds. Revenue from traditional arable farming was dwindling for them, so in 2003, the Mellor’s took the brave step of opening Wold Top Brewery in a converted barn. Fast forward to 2016 and their latest in a long line of awards, is the United Kingdom’s Best Golden Ale 2016 at the World Beer Awards.

The Mellor’s have managed this fantastic achievement by growing their own barley, using super malt from the Munton family in Bridlington, along with distinctive British grown hops and….. the jewel in their crown: beautifully tasting fresh water from the farm’s own borehole.

The water is gently filtered by the chalk of the Yorkshire Wolds, and its purity is surely a huge factor in creating these character real ales.

The water only travels a few metres from the borehole to the brewery, where the Mellor’s use traditional methods and recipes to create a really fantastic range of real ales, including several award winning gluten free beers.

As with many of our inventive farmers turned food and drink entrepreneurs, Tom & Gill value greatly the biodiversity on their farm, working hard to maintain rich chalk grassland, where flora and fauna and wildlife thrive.

The result is better, healthier crops and ultimately greater tasting ales. Hear, hear - we will drink to that!
